The Big Band | Summer Update 2022

10th Aug 2022
Martin's retirement & Paul's succession

The Big Band was sad to see Band Leader and founder of the Midlands Big Band Martin Jones, leave the band and the country! Now that he has retired, Martin has moved to Scotland. An excellent Band Leader, he will be sorely missed. His encouragement, support and enthusiasm ensured that the band developed into what it is today; and to be awarded the CSSC Innovation award in 2021.

Martin is succeeded by Paul Dyson and, although Martin leaves big boots to fill, Paul is an excellent replacement.

The tragic loss of Phil Rylance

Phil Rylance passed away suddenly in the Spring from an aortic aneurysm. He was playing his beloved Hofner guitar, practicing for an upcoming gig. Phil was an excellent musician, a true gentlemen and well respected by everyone in the Big Band.

He played bass professionally and wrote a book about his experience of touring in the 60s called 'Band on the Road'; but this is just a small snapshot of who Phil was. We are grateful for the time that he spent with the Big Band, albeit far too short.

Both Martin and Phil will be sorely missed. The Big Band hope to continue to meet quarterly and always welcome new members, whatever level of experience. Please contact band.midlands@csscvolunteer.co.uk
