Shane's Story

Shane is taking on the biggest sporting challenge of his life so far and is raising money for Prostate Cancer UK in the process.

Shane, one of the Defence Business Services Customer Relationship Managers, is taking on the biggest sporting challenge of his life so far and is raising money for Prostate Cancer UK in the process. Shane was chosen as one of the 11 Civil Servants on the CSSC Inspire Me 2018 campaign, where he wanted to help motivate others to get active.

Since then Shane has taken part in numerous parkruns, 10km road races, half marathons, duathlons as well as Sprint Triathlons and on June the 15th takes on the Titan Middle Distance Triathlon. The event takes place in the Brecon Beacons and consists of a 1.2-mile swim, then a very hilly 60-mile bike ride followed by a 13.1-mile run – 74.3 miles (119.6 km).

My ultimate challenge is to complete an Iron Man when I’m 50, I want to show other CSSC members, and their families, you can achieve anything you want regardless of your age – young or old.

I’ve gone from not much activity in August 2017 to running twice a week (with a weight loss!!), with the occasional long swim and short road bike excursions thrown in. I’ve also monitored my calorie intake but still have treats on a regular basis – so not a full on diet but a more sensible approach without actually changing the type of food I’m eating or the type of drinks I’m having. I’m doing more exercise to make sure I stay around longer for my children, this is one of my key motivations.

I love inspiring others to achieve goals they thought they could never do, even changing one person’s life for the better is an achievement in itself. I inspired my wife to join parkrun and is nearing her 50th event and to go swimming with me, my two stepsons have joined too. My daughter recently completed her 14th parkrun and my son is approaching his 10th.  I’m now helping set up Melksham’s Junior parkrun, a 2km event every Sunday.
