Badminton Icon

CSSC London Badminton Club

London Badminton ClubLondon Badminton Club

About us

The CSSC London Badminton Club started in summer 2006. We are an open and welcoming club to people of all abilities, and we try to cater to everyone, from absolute beginners to more experienced players.

Weekly meetings for players of all abilities, newcomers are welcome. Sesions are open to CSSC Members, cilvil servants and public sector employess.

Competitive games

The club does not play in a competitive league - we are primarily a social club. Games can get competitive, but they are not formally so.

We do run 1 or 2 formal team competitions a year for those who want to play more competitive games. The teams are usually a mixture of experienced and less experienced players, and we do our best to make them equal in terms of ability.

Coaching

We have offered formal coaching in the past, with trained coaches delivering 2 hours of coaching per month (2 groups of 4 or 5 people being coached for 1 hour each). However, there was a limited desire for coaching, and as it took up one of the three courts we have available we felt it was not a suitable use of the club's resource.

Informal coaching by more experienced players to beginners can be arranged, but should not be seen as 'proper' coaching form a certified coach.

Casual play and social activities

We offer casual play for all of our games, and our activities are typically organized in a laid-back manner. Additionally, we have a Social Secretary dedicated to planning social events, ensuring that at least one social gathering takes place every quarter

Joining the Club

Membership runs from January to December and is charged at £10.00 pp. Applications for new members open on the 1 January.

Fees

We charge £10.00 to join the club. You must be a CSSC member to be a London Badminton Club member.

Additional to the membership fee we charge the following for weekly badminton sessions (2 hours):

Club members £5.00
CSSC member, the first session is free
CSSC member: £7.50
Non-CSSC member, first session: £5.00
Non-CSSC member £10.00

Club meeting times

We currently meet each Tuesday for a two-hour session between 18:00 - 20:00. Pre booking is required to guarantee a space. Our current venue is the Westminster City School, near Victoria - 55 Palace Street, SW1E 5HJ.

Standards of player

We try to mix the games up so people get to play with other players of different standards, whilst ensuring that both sides are fairly equally matched.

People per session

As we only have three courts available, we limit the number of people who can play to 24 per session. Once we reach 22 people, we ask that games are limited to 17 points rather than 21, to encourage a more rapid turnover of games.

Taster sessions

If you havn't played at the Club before, the first taster session will be free for CSSC Members or £5.00 for Non CSSC Members. This can be booked by using a specific one-use code provided by a member of the London Badminton Club's Committee. Please use the contact form at the top of this page.

Shuttlecocks are provided aswell as a limited number of badminton rackets will be available for those that do not have their own

Whatever your standard – whether you’re a beginner, improver, or match player - the club offers great facilities in pleasant surroundings. We play on six immaculate carpet courts Winter and Summer. Members can take advantage of free group coaching sessions throughout the year – a great way to build confidence in your game and to meet people of your own standard.

We organise various social activities, including friendly tournaments and seasonal events, complemented by occasional barbecues and teas to foster camaraderie among members.

History

The Civil Service Lawn Tennis Club had a long history at Dukes Meadows starting in 1926. We often welcomed professional tennis players, such as Maria Sharapova and Vijay Amritraj warming up on our grass courts for Wimbledon or Queen's, as well as hosting junior qualifying events for Wimbledon. In Autumn 2019 we moved to the peaceful, riverside environs of St.Paul's school sports ground. Originally for the use of civil servants only, Thameside Tennis (formerly CSLTC) can now welcome all public sector workers and people from the local community to play on our superb courts.

The London region currently has four watersport clubs currently operating. These clubs are active and are always looking for new individuals to join up.

Civil Service Canoe ClubCivil Service Canoe Club

If you’ve ever fancied your hand at canoeing in one of its many forms, or you are an experienced paddler who has moved to London, we hope the Club will have something to offer you.

We are a small, friendly, mixed club of enthusiastic canoeists, of all abilities, ages and interests mainly based in the London area.

We are always happy to welcome newcomers – complete beginners and experienced canoeists alike. Most of our members had done little canoeing before they joined. We don’t require you to turn up every week for formal courses, but our qualified instructors are keen to help you progressively learn, at your own pace, coaching you as often as you are able to come along.

We provide opportunities for beginners to try out the sport and to develop their skills, under qualified supervision, both in a swimming pool and outside, according to the season. Some canoeing skills are easier to learn inside in warm, still water, so we organise pool sessions during the winter in central London. Other skills benefit from practice outdoors in plenty of space: paddling in a straight line is not quite as easy as it looks!

We offer coaching through our qualified coaches. Our social calendar is vibrant, including events like BBQs and Christmas parties. We also organize various events and trips, which you can find on our up-to-date listings. While we typically don't focus on competitive games, we're supportive of those interested in slalom competitions and offer assistance. For more information, you can visit our website Civil Service Canoe Club

Joining the Club

New members can join at any time of the year.

Joining the club not only gets you active, but we also have a programme of weekend trips, as well as holidays - either locally, elsewhere in the UK or abroad.

Please complete the London clubs contact form to submit your interest.

Fees

The cost of membership is £30 per year. There will be a reduced rate is payable by those joining the club for the first time after more than 3 months of the calendar year have already elapsed.

We do not expect newcomers to join until they have had the chance to meet us and have a go, but charges are made to all non-members taking part in Club activities, in respect of temporary membership. We also make small charges for the use of Club equipment, and for everyone using the pool.

Standards of player

All standards are welcome and we cater for all abilities

Equipment

The Club has general-purpose kayaks available for members’ use, plus paddles, buoyancy aids, spraydecks and helmets, as well as some more specialised (white water and sea) kayaks, and three open canoes. The only thing which beginners need to provide, apart from enthusiasm, is suitable clothing. In the summer, this need be no more than shorts, T-shirt and gym shoes, plus a fleece for cooler days, and a waterproof anorak or canoeing cagoule on chilly days or if it rains. For winter canoeing or moving water, a wetsuit (“long-john” and boots), with a cagoule, is normally used. A towel has been known to come in handy!

Beginners are advised not to buy equipment until they have had the chance to try it out, and to get expert advice (eg from the Club’s more experienced members). There is a great variety of types of boats and equipment available, and it is a shame to make mistakes over hasty purchases. For example, someone who wants to specialise solely in flat water touring would look for a quite different type of canoe from that used for white water playboating. There is normally no urgency for new members to buy their own equipment.

Cygnet Rowing ClubCygnet Rowing Club

Our rowing club offers a diverse range of activities for members. The Club competes in open regattas in the summer and Head Races in the winter. Events take place on the Thames and in the provinces. In addition, we usually make an October trip to Dusseldorf to row in the Rhine Marathon, a November trip to Birmingham for the British Indoor Rowing Champs and members have been known to compete in the odd marathon or triathlon as well.

While experienced members can row at their leisure after passing our steering test, Complete beginners have to get experience and pass the steering test, which will take a few years. To become a good rower very regular outings in squad sessions are required and we offer coaching.

Our club fosters a tight-knit community through social gatherings such as post-rowing dinners, picnics during Henley Royal Regatta, end-of-season dinners, official club lunches, and festive celebrations like the Christmas Party. Dinghy SailingDinghy Sailing

Littleton was the first CSSC Dinghy club. Established in 1958, along with the Civil Service Sailing Association (CSSA), it has a fascinating membership history, including past Heads of the Civil Service and members from many departments. CSSA comprises Dinghy and Yacht sailing clubs across the UK.

Situated on an attractive lake, near Shepperton, we offer year round dinghy racing and cruising, windsurfing and stand up paddle boarding. Adults can learn to sail on one of our RYA training courses. Junior members start learning in a relaxed fun environment and can go on to take RYA certificated courses led by fully qualified and experienced volunteer RYA Sailing Instructors.

In 2019 we celebrated 60 years, and are particularly proud to have been awarded 2018 Sports Club of the Year, in the Spelthorne Borough Sports Awards.

Littleton SC also hosts the Civil Service Angling Association and CS Diving Club who use the water. Enquiries for Angling or Diving should be directed to those groups, not Littleton Sailing Club, please.

We run Dinghy racing throughout the year, and on Saturday and Sunday, Tuesday evening and other times through the summer. Many of our members also compete at National or International level.

We are a recognised RYA training centre, and run regular Adult and Youth training from novice to expert. As a volunteer club, we also enjoy supporting each other at whatever stage of sailing we are at.

We have dinghies for club members to rent at affordable rates. Through the CS Sailing Association, you will also have access to Yacht training and cruising opportunities on the South Coast.

Littleton’s clubhouse is ideal for social events with our Galley operating most weekends through the summer and our own licenced bar. We run social events alongside social sailing and racing, including members at National level.
