CSSC Awards

The winners have been announced!
Every year, we celebrate those who have made an outstanding contribution to CSSC with our CSSC Awards.

Sponsorship for the Awards

We're delighted that the Civil Service Insurance Society (CSIS) is sponsoring this years' CSSC Awards Celebration. CSIS have been our main CSSC Awards sponsor since 2007.

The CSIS team have been looking after CSSC members for many years and their emphasis on quality insurance products and services, as well as competitive pricing, helps CSIS to gain and retain customers at levels well above normal industry standards. CSIS is able to offer discounted rates to serving and retired civil servants and to their partners. They provide a range of products which include motor, home and travel insurance.

Volunteer of the Year Award

Throughout our history there have been hundreds of members who have happily given up their time and effort to help make CSSC what it is today. Without these wonderful individuals, CSSC couldn’t begin to offer as much as it does for members.

The Volunteer of the Year award recognises volunteers who've made an outstanding contribution in a single year, looking at both their input and impact on the organisation.

Volunteer of the Year Award Winner | Martin Rudman

After volunteering with CSSC for over 30 years, starting with the Rutherford Laboratory Recreation Society, we're proud to announce that Martin Rudman is our Volunteer of the Year!

Martin goes above and beyond in every aspect of volunteering. Coincidentally, he'll also be retiring from Rutherford Laboratory tomorrow, where his time as a volunteer there will be coming to an end. What better way to celebrate during Volunteer Week.

Please join us in both celebrating and thanking Martin, the Chair of Oxford Area Association, for all of his outstanding work for CSSC this past year alone. Congratulations, Martin!

Sportsperson Award Winner | Marguerite Butt

Next for CSSC's Virtual Awards, we introduce the Sportsperson Award. We present this to a member who's made a significant impact on a CSSC activity and sport, either in one particular year or over a number of years. This year, we're celebrating Marguerite Butt and her accomplishments in Badminton.

Over the past 15 years, Marguerite has competed in a range of County and International competitions around the UK, regularly winning them or finishing as runner up, she's also represented Team England Over 50's. Last August she competed at the World Age Group Championships in Poland. Playing through an injury, she won Bronze in the Singles event and came home as Over 65's World Champions with her Doubles partner. She also plays for her local club and in the Devon Over 60's county team.

Despite Marguerite’s successes over the years as a player, she's always demonstrated a huge commitment to CSSC sport. Volunteering as the South West Region Badminton Organiser for well over 20 years from 1979, as well as being on the CSSC Badminton SRB committee. For over 40 years she's taken part in both CSSC and RCSL (and IRSA before that) competitions – and still does against much younger competition. What an inspiration, congratulations Marguerite!

The Hayward & Duke of York Trophies

The Hayward Trophy Winner | Feltham Garrison Sports and Social Association

Every year since 1992, the Hayward Trophy has been awarded to the national sports association or national sports organiser that has achieved the most for its activity and membership in that year.

Congratulations to the Feltham Garrison Sports and Social Association for winning the Hayward Trophy this year!

The Duke of York Trophy Winners | HASSRA

Since 1924, The Duke of York Trophy has been annually awarded, to the Department securing the most championships in CSSC competitions.

The Duke felt very strongly that; the best means of promoting the highest standard of true amateur sport in the civil service was by fostering inter-departmental rivalry and enthusiasm.

This year, the Duke of York Trophy winners are HASSRA. Congratulations!

Innovation Award Winner | Midlands Big Band

In 2015 we introduced the Innovation Award. It celebrates an affiliated association, club, regional council, national sports organiser or regional organiser that has introduced an innovative project, leading to a major, positive impact on CSSC.

After recognising that there weren't any musical participation activities available in their region, CSSC volunteers in the Midlands looked to include Arts within their Regional Programme. One particular activity created an opportunity for musically minded members, musicians and singers, to come together and take part in an activity that they were passionate about. Last year, 15 members from around the Midlands, who didn’t know each other, traveled to Derby on a Saturday morning. They took their instruments out and started performing together. They've met to practice and perform together since this first session, as well as anticipating future rehearsals. All thanks to the Midlands Arts Officer and a Band Leader who created this engaging new space for members in the Midlands.

Congratulations Clare Snape and Martin Jones, the Innovation Award goes to you and the CSSC Midlands Big Band that you created together!
