An Audience with Father Christmas

Join in the festive fun with the man himself at our sites this Christmas. Meet Father Christmas as he tells festive tales amidst the yuletide decorations.

£5.00 charge on the day. Free entry to the site for yourself, one other adult and accompanying children (max. 6 under the age of 18). Present your CSSC membership card and one form of photo ID to gain free entry.

Audley End

Over the seasonal period the historic kitchen will be a flurry of activity as the kitchen staff begin preparations for the Christmas dinner which will be served to Lord and Lady at Audley End House. Come and meet the staff while you inhale the spices and smells from the seasonal dishes which would have once laddened the Braybrooke’s Christmas table and discover how the servants Christmas meal would be different.

Tintern Abbey - Brother Thomas the Cellarer

Step back in time with Brother Thomas and learn what life was like as a monk in Tintern Abbey. Our sympathetic brother will give you inside information about the monks’ rituals and responsibilities. As the cellarer of Tintern Abbey, he will be able to tell you all that is to know (and perhaps some things you shouldn’t know!) about the workings of the abbey, his fellow monks, the lay brothers and other ‘less religious’ people!

Use willow and natural plants to make a wreath for your door - naturally made, simply beautiful. Create your natural willow wreath from scratch, then weave it with seasonal wetland plants. All materials are provided.

Early Birds

On this Early Bird opening visitors have the chance watch the reserve awaken (sunrise is at 8.02 am). No booking is required for this event. Our Water's Edge Café opens for breakfast at 9.30am and the Wetland Discovery Boat Safari begins running at the usual time of 11am.

Children's pine cone craft drop-in sessions run every afternoon. The Wetland Discovery Boat Safari is running every day from 11:00 - 15:30. So, when you’re sick of the sales and tired of the telly, why not take a walk among the wildlife? Relax next to panoramic wetland views in our restaurant, and breathe in the fresh air as you walk through stunning scenery.

Dawn Flight

'Framing Nature' Trail

Experience the sights and sounds of hundreds of whooper swans, mute swans, ducks and geese at the daily swans feeds, commentated by the warden. Learn more about the whooper swans as they arrive from their migration from Iceland. Use the touchscreen in the Sir Peter Scott Observatory to find out more about the individual whooper swans out on the Whooper pond.

Festive Stories in the Yurt

Christmas at Castle Espie

Make magical memories at Castle Espie this December with a visit to Santa and his Elves’ Workshop. Relax whilst the children make their own decorations to hang on your Christmas tree at home and take part in our special colouring-in competition, before journeying through our Elves’ Workshop.

Watch as Santa’s little helpers’ busily countdown to Christmas, but come prepared, as they may need your help to be ready for the best day of the year!

You’ll then get to meet Santa himself, who is cosied up by a roaring fire in his traditional living room.

Winter Highlights in the Reserve

A staggering 50,000 wintering waterbirds fill the estuary of the scenic Bury Inlet at Llanelli Wetland Centre. See if you can spot wading birds like oystercatchers and blacktailed godwits or be lucky to see rarities like the great white egret or even a bittern. Plus we’ve hundreds of friendly ducks and geese that will happily feed from your hand, including the rarest goose in the world, the friendly Hawaiian Nene and don’t miss our fabulous flock of Caribbean flamingos.

Robin Nest Workshops

Our reserve is a wildlife wonderland in winter. For an additional activity during your visit, take part in a guided winter walk around our reserve with one of our expert volunteers. They'll tell you all about the wildlife you can see as you explore out wetlands, including information about the amazing whooper swans and their amazing migration journey from Iceland to Martin Mere.

You'll also be given some tips and tricks on bird watching and how to identify certain species around the reserve.

Santa's Coming to Slimbridge

This Christmas treat your family to a unique and memorable festive day out – and meet Santa himself!

This year we're offering a super-special experience to really make Christmas spectacular. Join us for breakfast or afternoon tea and visit Santa in his magical grotto.

Throughout the day there’ll be lots of other fun Christmas activities too. Ice your own gingerbread man, build an elf den, toast marshmallows, get creative making arts and crafts - and don't forget to send a letter to the North Pole at our post office!

Slimbridge Cygnets - Winter Crafts

Spend some time creating beautiful winter crafts to decorate your tree and home, inspired by what we can see around us. Followed by an end of year picnic - please bring some food for your little ones to eat.

Elf Academy

Christmas is coming and to help spread the festive cheer, our popular Elf Academy is once again opening its doors to young recruits.

Enrol on one of our special workshops and learn everything you need to know to gain your all-important Elf Diploma, including special ‘elf & safety guidelines, the spirit of kindness, gift wrapping for beginners and essential craft skills.

Our Head Elf and her assistants will guide elves-to-be in the art of creating your own personalised wooden name toggles, wooden animal pen holders and magic reindeer food to sprinkle outside your home on Christmas Eve!

Training will continue as you wrap and label your donated gift (a toy or book that we ask all Elf Academy recruits to bring in with them on the day, and we then donate these gifts to a local charity). Finish the day with a special graduation ceremony where elf recruits will receive their elf diploma! Then enjoy a well-earned hot drink and tasty homemade treat in our cafe!

Wicken Fen and It's Creatures - past, present and future

An evening talk by Ajay Tegala, Ranger for National Trust at Wicken Fen.

The evening's talk will look at the wildlife of Wicken Fen and also how it is being managed with the use of grazing livestock as part of an ambitious project to grow the reserve for the benefit of nature and people.
