If you’re planning to visit the Welsh valleys, no trip to the land of the castles is complete without taking in the magnificent heritage of Cadw. Wales boasts the greatest concentration of historic monuments, castles, churches and places of interest in the UK.

Coronavirus guest update

Selected Cadw sites will be closed from 5 December. A number of other Cadw sites will remain open, but with indoor areas of the monuments closed due to the latest government regulations.

Please check the Cadw website to see which sites are open and the restrictions in place. All visitors will still be required to pre-book tickets in advance of visiting due to reduced capacity.

Cheese and Castles

Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly. It dominates. Hogs the limelight. Think slumbering giant awaiting a call to arms. It’s also a great backdrop for TV and film.

It secured a starring role recently in the popular BBC TV series Merlin. This stone behemoth, surrounded by a series of moats and watery islands was the brainchild of Gilbert ‘the Red’ de Clare, a redheaded nobleman of Norman descent. He also built the original Castell Coch, ‘Red Castle’, located the other side of Caerphilly mountain.

Easy to book, castle is in Caerphilly Town and lots of parking and places to stop for a drink. We visited under Covid19 conditions so few visitors, we enjoyed our day out.
