It was primarily for her significant role in creating the CSSC's South Yorkshire Area Association (AA) that Debra became the first recipient of The Turnbull Award.
How did you get into CSSC volunteering?
I was frustrated as not having an Area Association to administer the South Yorkshire budget and Irena suggested I set up an Area Association to do just that.
Where do you volunteer?
South Yorkshire AA.
What do you do as a CSSC volunteer?
I persuaded colleagues and active CSSC members in my area to set up a committee which I Chair. I set up an email group for all CSSC member and issue emails regularly to ensure that members are aware of our programme of events/offers and those on the website.
What is your proudest moment/ memory of being a CSSC Volunteer?
Winning the inaugural Volunteer of the Year Award presented by Lord Turnbull
What are the best bits about volunteering for CSSC (and the worst bits)?
Best bits – gaining new members and receiving positive feedback on the events/offers we have organised. Worst bits – people who moan at receiving emails re CSSC – I advise them that they can set up a wizard rule to automatically delete CSSC emails if necessary but will not stop issuing them to whole offices as potential new members!
What has kept you involved as a volunteer with CSSC?
The support of my marvellous committee.
What does it mean to be awarded the Volunteer of the Year?
Very humbling and emotional and there are people out there who have contributed so much more over a longer period.
What would you say to other people who might want to volunteer with CSSC?
Go for it as it is very rewarding.
