Volunteer Profile - Jean Wilcox

Jean Willcox, Regional Secretary, Midlands Region explains how she got involved in CSSC and why she enjoys giving the time.

How did you get into CSSC volunteering?

The Coventry AA was formed about 1973 and I volunteered to act as secretary. Someone else also volunteered for the job and was appointed. About six months later I was asked to take over and was AA secretary until I retired in 1993. In addition to the secretarial work I also organised various sports and events each year. I was also the instigator of the purchase of 2 caravans for the use of members and was responsible for the opening and closing of one of the vans each year. I arranged the publicity and dealt with all the bookings for the vans.

As AA secretary I attended the West Midland Regional Council meetings and was appointed Regional Secretary about 1985. When the East and West Midlands Regions amalgamated I was appointed secretary for the new Midlands Region.

Where do you volunteer?

In the Midlands Region.

What do you do as a CSSC volunteer?

I carry out all the duties as set out in the Regional Secretary Job Description.

I also order all the trophies and prizes for the Regional competitions and organise special events e.g gliding, white water rafting etc.

What is your proudest moment/ memory of being a CSSC Volunteer?

Receiving the Merit Award.

What are the best bits about volunteering for CSSC(and the worst bits)?

The best bits are meeting different people, going to different places and events. The satisfaction of seeing all arrangements come together successfully.

The worst bits are trying to establish contact with those AA officers who do not want to attend meetings and trying to get information from them regarding what is happening in their Areas. Also getting publicity for events out to members

What has kept you involved as a volunteer with CSSC?

Nobody else is prepared to do the job! Seriously, you get out what you put in and it has given me much pleasure over the years.

What would you say to other people who might want to volunteer with CSSC?

The CSSC is a wonderful organisation which couldn't run without volunteers. Get involved. If there is something you want to do you will get all the support you need. If this involves other people you will give them pleasure whilst you do what you enjoy.
