Lewis Cup

Volunteers re-vamp one of the most prestigious sporting competitions in CSSC5-a-side Football

The Lewis Cup is an impressive solid silver trophy that's been competed for within CSSC since 1923. However, as with many large team sporting competitions, it offers particular challenges for the organisers in the modern day work environment. The new CSSC National Panel for Football, made up of volunteers from around the organisation, played a key role in re-formatting the competition and re-launching it for the 2010/11 season.

Rather than a straight knockout as before, the new competition includes a more modern and structured format. For this first season, entering teams have been allocated to one of three tiers based on their known/past performance. Each team will play on a round robin basis with the top two teams attending a finals day to compete for the relevant trophy of their group - the top group, 'the Premier League', competing for the Lewis Cup. The top/bottom teams will be promoted and relegated from their respective groups. The advantages of the new format include:

  • Greater certainty over the matches to be played; which can be arranged months in advance
  • At least four games for every team
  • Three trophies to compete for; one for each group
  • Far fewer opportunities for a complete miss-match of standards
  • A contribution towards expenses made to every competing team, not just those that progress
  • Promotion and relegation provides the incentive to be competitive throughout the competition
  • Scope to expand and zone as the competition grows in the future

Watch out for results over the weeks and months to come and see how the three league tables ebb and flow as the results come in. These details will be shown on Football's web page within the Sports & Activities section.
