CSSC Sportswoman of the Year 2009

Heather Tweedle's impressive performance in CSSC squash during 2009 is recognised with the CSSC Sportswoman of the Year Award.

Heather is the current women's CSSC Champion and Women's Veterans Champion and has held these honours for the past five years.

In the Annual CSSC Inter Departmental Mixed Team Event she has not lost a match for her department team, RCSL in the 7 years she has played in the event.

Outside of CSSC she is the current British Over 45 Women's Champion. She has also represented England on a number of occasions in recent years.

In recognition of her considerable achievements, the Chairman was delighted to award the Centels Salver to Heather Tweedle - HMRC

CSSC Sportsman of the Year 2009

For his considerable success in CSSC athletics in 2009, the winner of the Warren Fisher Trophy is Steve Marklew, HMRC.

Steve was a key member of the RCSL team which won the CSSC Track and Field Championships, 10k Road Race, Half Marathon, Road Relays and Cross Country.

He was also the inaugural winner of the Civil Service Athletic Association's Half Marathon which in itself is a notable achievement as he is a master athlete in the 40-44 age group and in winning the event he lead the way over many younger athletes.

One person does not make a team, but the fact that he featured in all four of the RCSL's Men's Team victories in 2009 in CSSC Road and Cross Country Championships speaks volumes for his all round ability and loyalty.

An important fact to know about this member , and one which he does not flaunt, is the fact that he has visually impaired sight which, in athletic terms, is classified as being in the T13/B3 category. It was in this category in the 2009 London Marathon that he set a new British and European record in the fantastic time of 2 hours 36 minutes and 58 seconds, which was also a personal best.

Sports Association of the Year

The Hayward Trophy for 2009 was awarded to the Civil Service Cricket Association (CSCA).

The CSCA deserve congratulations for the way they have embraced their changing environment and sought to make sure their events are accessible and open to all abilities.

During 2009 the CSCA staged a new style of delivery for their sport at the CSSC Games.

2009 also marked an increase in overall participation in this activity for CSSC with1576 members participating Efforts have already been made to increase this figure in 2010.

A well managed sports association with a rich and illustrious history this association has sought to widen participation and deserves recognition for its commitment to grow its sport.

Russell Scott Trophy - Area Association of the Year 2009

The well deserved winner of the Russell Scott Trophy for 2009 is South Yorkshire Area Association.

South Yorkshire AA was only set up in 2007 but has already risen to the challenge presented to them.

It has has won its respective Regional AA of the Year Award for the last two years

The AA sought from the start to engage with the many departments across the city. Seven departments are currently represented on its committee.

The AA offered many social activities during 2009 including discounted tickets for X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing and a Girls Aloud concert.

Sport also attracted the AA's interest including a discount scheme for a local gym, a scheme to help members fund their children to attend football coaching and discounted tickets for several prestigious rugby fixtures.

Several charities benefitted from the AA's efforts.

New members receive a personal letter from the AA chairman welcoming them and outlining the benefits available through the AA.

Since its setting up the AA has remained focussed on increasing its membership. All new members receive a £5 Love 2 Shop voucher. The AA's membership has increased from 912 to 1518 in 2 years.

Highly Commended

The Chairman felt sure Darlington Area Association will continue to build on its success and had no hesitation in awarding a Highly Commended Plaque to Darlington Area Association.

A small AA, its dedicated committee managed with a limited budget to offer an imaginative and varied programme.

The AA was practically dormant around 5 years ago, but through hard work the committee has built up an impressive activity programme. This included many social trips, a bi monthly prize draw and two successful charity events.

The AA also sought successfully to improve its membership within a limited catchment area attracting over a 100 new members during 2009.

Highly Commended

Suffolk Area Association receive a Highly Commended marking in recognition of their commitment to support members irrespective of whether they fall within the Area's catchment.

This AA was at the forefront of CSSC's Extended Boundary Scheme.

Their enthusiasm for the concept helped cement its acceptance and introduction. In recognition they were awarded the 2004 Russell Scott Trophy.

Since then the AA has continued to be amongst the CSSC's leading AAs. During 2009 this AA offered an impressive array of social activities. It prides itself on a proactive approach and at the end of 2009 it already had 26 events planned for 2010.

The AA are keen advocates of liaison and networking and work closely with surrounding AAs by exchanging ideas and circulating their newsletter to other AAs. In addition they will advertise other AA events to their membership and welcome members from outside of their catchment to their offers and events.

Their network of office contacts is encouraged to recruit new members.


Duke of York Trophy

RCSL, the Departmental Sports Association for HMRC were awarded the Duke of York Trophy for the best record in CSSC's national activity programme in 2009.
