| CSSC Yorkshire Region held its annual Conference at the Crown Hotel, Harrogate in late November. This was one of the hotels Agatha Christie used to frequent when she 'disappeared' from public view. After lunch on the Friday (with some delicious little tarts) conference was opened by the chair, Mervyn Stanley. Introductions over, Operations Director David Hayday gave an overview of CSSC's current issues. Refreshed by a coffee break, problems of funding and expenses issues were explored, from both Area and Regional perspectives. Following this First Aid at events was discussed, with tips on what to do before qualified assistance arrives. The afternoon was rounded off with a talk from Hedley Featherstone, and a Certificate of Recognition was awarded to hard working treasurer, Barbara Leopard. The real ale pub over the road hosted pre-dinner drinks, before a relaxing meal in the hotel was scheduled to round off the day. This was not to be however. A murder was reported during the first course, and throughout the meal, cryptic clues emerged to help guests solve the crime. But with no murderer caught, the amateur sleuths were given a quiz, and had to find the answers on a wordsearch. When completed, it revealed the location, weapon and name of the suspected killer. Fear swept through the room as it slowly became clear the culprit was the quizmaster. In the morning, it was plain to see we were missing people from the previous day...maybe the killer had struck again. The remaining guests listened to rapid fire topics from David and Hedley followed by more information on valuing volunteers. The future of the region was then discussed, and presentations were rounded off by Peter Withers who gave his thoughts and reflections on CSSC from his new Vice Chairman's perspective. No-one knows what happened to the murderer. Look out for him at your next Conference. A more detailed record of the Conference has been written by Hull AA Chairman, David G Mills.
