Event Description West Riding and Craven Area CSSC is planning a train trip to Appleby on Friday July 31.
The train leaves Shipley station at 10.02am and we will catch the Carlisle train.
We head through Skipton, then onto Settle junction where we start the famous 'Long drag' as we rise the steep gradient 1 in 100. We cross two majestic viaducts, 'Dent Head' and 'Arten Gill', which has tremendous views of the three peaks and the Howgill Fells. We pass through England's highest main line station at Dent. Then we climb to the line summit 'Ais Gill' before reaching the picturesque village of Appleby at about 11.36am.
After a brief walk of the village, you have a choice of places to eat before making your journey back along the line.
Each person will receive an itinerary, which lists train times with some featured public houses and phone numbers along the route. Please note the last train times as we do not want anybody stranded.
For the energetic ones among us, there is the chance to indulge in a small walk. Perhaps Dent to the sportsman pub or visit Hull pot near Pen Y Ghent at Horton in Ribblesdale.
The train fare will hopefully be about £15.00 (group discount permitting) but you will also need to bring enough spending for food and drink for the day.
If you are interested in joining us for the day, please e-mail me, Ihor Lewyk, by Wednesday July 22. I will send you an itinerary sheet and will also include you in a group discount for the train fare.
