Roger Howarth describes his day spent at the RCSL Tennis Championships:
I have just returned from a superb 4/5 days in Bournemouth at the RCSL
Tennis championships. As I am a newcomer to RCSL, having recently been moved
across from DWP, this was my first national event with a new department.
The Yorkshire team of 6 was already in place and funded from their local group. I had entered in the singles, veterans singles, doubles and veterans doubles.
I was able to progress through the odd round or two but was hampered by an injury flaring up. I was helped by the superb physios who were available for all to use.
We had over 80 people competing in the various events, with something for
players of all abilities. Anyone who is used to ball or racket sports should be encouraged to enter, whether or not they regard themselves as tennis players. They would be most welcome. Obviously, there are some very
good players as well!
The facilities at the West Hants club were superb with 17 outdoor courts with American clay, synthetic grass, and acrylic. There are 4 indoor courts,a gym, studios, swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms. There is a club shop, bar, full restaurant facilities, beauty therapist and physios.
It is planned to hold the event there next year, but the event does get moved
around the country to encourage others to enter. Having said that, Bournemouth is well connected to most areas. Some flew down from Scotland and Newcastle.
We stayed mostly at the Trouville hotel for which we had negotiated a good deal for bed, breakfast and evening meal. The hotel had a small gym and pool which was nice. It was very central and close to the beach. Most of us were able to get together after dinner and sample the local nightlife.
All in all a fantastic event superbly organised by Nigel Daniels and his team of helpers.
