| 8th August 2008 saw the Barbados Challenge South West Pool competition take place in Taunton. The top two players in the singles event, and the top pair in the pairs event would win themselves a place on the 2009 trip to Barbados. Mark Compton, one of the competitors describes the event as 'an excellent competition with a lot of hard fought matches throughout the day. The good organisation and top class venue produced some high quality and exciting matches, where no single player gave an inch and some matches were decided on good fortune alone.' Derek Saddington and Mark Compton both finished the 'round robin' phase unbeaten despite some excellent opposition. The final was a close fought affair and it called on all the tactical knowledge and experience from both Derek and Mark, with Mark squeezing home in the final match to clinch the victory. In the pairs event, congratulations to Sam Congdon and Mark Luscombe who beat their opponents to gain their place on the trip to Barbados 2009. Congratulations also, to all of the players for what has been described as 'friendly but competitive play'. Thanks also to Paul Bebb who organised this event brillaintly and helped ensure it was a resounding success. |
