South West 5 a side football
Wednesday 10 September saw 9 teams head to Bristol Goals! to take part in the CSSC South West Region 5 a side football competition. As well as being the Regional Qualifier for the CSSC National competition, it was also a Barbados Challenge event.
Given the recent bad weather we were incredibly lucky to have a dry day, with some sun thrown in as well!!
The day got off to a good start and all teams threw themselves into the event. It was run as two leagues, with the winners and runners up from each group going through to the semi finals.
In the group stages there were some cracking shots and some excellent football was played. In Group B, the last two matches were the deciding matches for first and second place. GCSLA were the first team to qualify, and everything rested on the result between DSTL Winfrith and Gloucester and Registry with DSTL needed the win to go through. With a minute to go, DSTL were one nil up, however in the last minute they were unfortunate enough to score an own goal, and there was not enough time for them to recover. In Group A, the teams to go through were PPPA Bath (Last years champions) and Plymouth United.
The semi finals saw Plymouth United take on Gloucester Land Registry and GCSLA play PPPA Bath. Both matches were fast paced and saw plenty of goals.
The final was between Plymouth United and GCSLA. With both teams knowing that the winners would not only represent the South West Region at the CSSC National final, but would also be offered the opportunity to represent the Region against the Bajan Civil Service, the stakes were high. The game was closely fought and as fast as one team scored a goal to go ahead, the other came back and equalled it. In the closing minutes, GCSLA went one goal ahead and Plymouth did not manage to come back at them, leaving GCSLA the winning team.
Congratulations to all of the teams who took part on the day, which was enjoyed by all.
