Barbados Challenge - Sports Quiz Report
After a day spent on last minute revision, mainly consisting of lying on the beach and checking the local bars to see which had coverage of the England v Ukraine match, we made our way to the Police Sports Club to participate in the Sports Quiz.
After a somewhat lengthy delay, during which it was initially rumoured that the Bajans would be late in arriving and then that they wouldn't be turning up at all, we were ready to pit our wits against the island's finest sporting brains. The delay did, however, give us plenty of opportunity to acquaint ourselves with some (quite a lot really) of Mr Banks' liquid refreshment and watch our colleagues performing in the other sports arranged for that evening. Who would have thought that dominoes was such a noisy game?
The quiz itself was a very close run affair with the lead changing hands regularly. In the end, it all came down to the individual round and, in particular, two questions. The Bajan player was asked where the 2007 Champions League final was held. After answering correctly (Athens), he admitted that he had actually been to the match. Our question was based on the sport (?) of Bridge. With apologies to any aficionados who may read this, none of us had bothered to revise this subject as it is not a sport. However, an educated guess was made but, unfortunately, the wrong answer given. The Bajans picked up a bonus point by correctly guessing that Spades are the strongest suit and it was this point that was to prove the difference between the teams at the end of the night.
Despite the loss, a great evening was had with our extremely friendly hosts, providing great hospitality. We quickly got over the disappointment of losing and enjoyed the rest of our stay immensely.
Thanks to the CSSC and Team Travel organisers for a great trip.
