Event Description The next day walk planned is for Saturday 11 October in the Galloway Hills Forest Park, where both the high a low walks will start.
High Walk – Merrick, the highest summit in the Southern Uplands (2540ft/ 770m). Start from the large car park above Loch Trool and head north opposite Bruce’s stone, with Buchan Burn on the right, up through the forest to the ruined cottage at Culshag. From here it carries on to the summit of Benyellary which is marked by a cairn. We then continue over a broad col known as the ‘Neive of the Spit’ and on to the large cairn of Merrick. If the weather is good we can expect superb views. Total Distance 8miles/13k.
Low Walk - Green Trail, Loch Trool. Start from the Glentrool Visitor Centre. Walk along Loch Trool and enjoy the sound of the water lapping against the rocky shores. Stand where the Battle of Steps of Trool was fought between the English and the Scots. Take in the stunning views across the tranquil waters to the Fell of Eschoncan and Buchan Hill, the foothills of the Merrick. Total Distance 51/2 miles, with a slight diversion at the end to the Hill o House Hotel at Bargrennan.
