CROWN GREEN BOWLS 2009Duncan Crabtree at Waterloo

Duncan Crabtree (DWP Preston) became the new 2009 CSSC National Open Individual Champion, bowling consistently well all day. He defeated Roger Candlin (Oswestry) in his first game of the day 21-12, then came up against a determined Tony Garmson (Telford) with the score at 20 across, Tony's last bowl just drifting inches through the end to enable Duncan to reach the semi final 21-20. His opponent in the semi was Christine Sutcliffe (Leeds) who, although bowled well, lost 14-21.

The final between Duncan Crabtree and Chris Gale (DWP Blackpool) turned out to be one of the best CSSC finals for quite a few years. With both bowlers in top form, and with a final score of 21-20, Duncan took the title of CSSC National Open Individual Champion for the first time, having been a runner up previously.

He was presented with the magnificent "Hospital" cup by Peter James (NW Regional Secretary). He also received a voucher, a memento, a new set of Bowls donated by "Metrolux Bowls of Warrington" and an invite into the Federation Merit.

With still some energy left, Duncan then took the CSSC North West Regional "John Spence Memorial" trophy sponsored by "Newton le Willows Blinds", defeating John Mitchell (DWP Blackpool) in that final, 21-17.

CSSC NATIONAL TEAM K.O. FINAL

Hassra North West "A" team set a new record by winning the "Team K.O." cup for a fourth consecutive year, Hassra West Midlands being the opponents in the final this year.

The Midlanders last won the title in 1999 and so were keen to upset their opponents' run of wins. However, on the day, they conceded by 20 chalks 132-152.

Good wins by Derek Ainsworth (Southport) 21-7, & Colin Parry (Liverpool) for the champions proved decisive.
