A new venue for the Darts this year, the Berkeley Tavern in Whitley Bay, and although there were some issues with the equipment not being at hand, thanks to Colin Banks, Dave Laws, Stephen Adams, Dave Blythe and John Trousedale (PDC), the boards were eventually in place and ready for the scheduled start.

Again as always the turn out was excellent, with 32 entrants. A lot of the regulars were there and it was nice to see a few new faces too. All events were played on a “round robin” group basis, to get us to the semi final stages.

In the Ladies doubles we had Katie & Sue taking on Louise & Deby, whilst in the other half of the draw, we had Sarah & Allyson playing Dawn & Sam. The outcome of the semi final matches gave us a final contested between Katie & Sue versus Dawn & Sam. In a closely matched game, with some good scoring by all, it was Dawn & Sam who hit the important doubles to take the win and the place representing the region in Stoke.

In the men’s team event we saw Dave, Dave & Phil take on Wally, Rob & Carl in one semi final, whilst in the other we had Tony, Scott & Joe play Allan, James & Karl. Both semi finals were close run things which could have seen any of the teams make it through to the final, but the triumphant teams were Wally, Rob & Carl set to meet Allan, James & Karl in the final.

Again another closely contested match, but the winners going through to Stoke and retaining their regional title were Wally, Rob and Carl.

Making it through the group stages, the ladies singles semi final line up gave us Sarah, Liz, Allyson and Katie competing for a place in the final, the outcome being Liz and Katie progressing through, and in a very competitive match, it was Liz who ran out winner, which meant Katie who had played well all day, had lost out in both finals.

As with the ladies singles, the men’s singles event was also run on a group basis, with the four group winners making it through to the semi’s. The first semi saw Allan Armstrong meet Mark, whilst the other half of the draw saw Alan Heron take on Phil. The resulting final saw Mark and Phil progress through, playing over 5 legs, Mark took the first with a excellent bull finish, and soon took a 2-1 lead, Phil then took the fourth leg in 14 darts to tie up the final, and edged the final leg to take the win.

All in all it was a good day enjoyed by all, and nice to see Dave Henderson and Chris White take the time to attend. Hopefully next year, we’ll be back to a more usual time of year, also alternating the event south of the region in Darlington.

Best of luck to all our representatives at Stoke in November.
