A good mix of competition and technique training
RCSL / CSSC East & West Midlands Regional Day of Cycling
9 June 2008
The turnout on the day was more or less as expected, with 14 riders signing on. There were entries from three others, but work commitments kept them away on the day.
Of the 14
6 were members of CSSC
3 were members of RCSL
5 were members of both
During the day there were 6 separate competitions and a coaching session.
1) Individual Time Trial over 4 laps (3.16) miles.
After some free practice on the circuit this enabled everyone to be able to compare their own times. At this stage most riders were not that familiar with the circuit and its bends and the times which were between 7.30 and 11.40 would be expected to improve.
2) Coaching Session with Adrian Timmis (former GB Olympic Pursuit rider 1984, Tour de France finisher).
Having assessed the general ability of the group Adrian concentrated on improving the cornering speed of all the riders, demonstrating technique and giving everyone feedback on their style. He also worked on the ability of riders to ride in close formation so as to get the wind advantage from a rider in front. The session lasted 2 hours and Adrian was thanked by all for what was considered to be really useful.
3) Points Race A & B
The group was divided into 2 from the time trial results to give a faster group and a slower group. Over the 10 laps of each race points were given for the first 3 riders over the line at the end of laps 2, 4, 6, 8 and the finish.
Race A
1) Lindsay Barral 12 points
2) Mike Hipkin 10 points
3) Nick Spargo 5 points
Race B
1)Bob Heath 12 points
2)Lynn Bradley 9 points
3)Tim Lloyd 8 points
4)Sprint Time Trial
This event is all about explosive power and the ability to corner, hopefully the coaching was going to be useful. From a standing start it is one lap around the short circuit
| Name | Time | Name | Time |
| Lindsay Barral | 52.46 | Nicholas Bent | 1.01.09 |
| Mike Hipkin | 56.60 | Bob Heath | 1.01.12 |
| John Ellams | 58.01 | Tim Lloyd | 1.03.11 |
| Steve Marklew | 58.52 | Dave Smith | 1.04.11 |
| Nick Spargo | 58.63 | Lynn Bradley | 1.08.12 |
| Neil Lawford | 1.00.35 | Dick Kneill | 1.13.23 |
5)Scratch Race
The last event of the day was a longer race, again split into two but run at the same time. The slower group racing for 20 minutes plus 3 laps and the faster group for a further 3 laps. There was plenty of competition in both groups with some furious sprints for the line at the end. Unfortunately in the packing up the timekeepers sheets seem to have been mislaid.
