On the 8th of September 7 archers from the Eastern region headed south to the wilds of Kent
to take part in the joint Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC) / Civil Service Archery Association
(CSAA) Outdoor Championships.
After a nights rest this intrepid band gathered at the Old Dunstonians Sports Ground in Beckenham, the home of the Crystal Palace Bowmen, to shoot for the various individual and team trophies at distances up to 100yds for gents and 80yds for ladies.
Despite being only a small number, for the first time in over 7 years we fielded 1 area and 2 regional teams, missing out on a second area team because we lacked an additional recurve archer.
For the majority this was their first or second time shooting at this event, but it proved to be a successful day with trophies and medals coming back in their baggage as detailed below:
- E A Mahoney Arrows Gents Recurve Joint Bronze Medal- Dave Long
- NICSSA Neptune Chalice Ladies Compound Bronze Medal - Helen Darby-Smythe.
- Regional Compound Team Trophy and Gold Medals - Eastern Region (John Gorman, Ron Vernon & Helen Darby-Smythe).
- Regional Recurve Team Bronze Medals - Eastern Region (Dave Long, Brian Cracknell, Steve Darby-Smythe & Iain Robertson).
- Area Team 4th place - Cambridge (Dave Long, John Gorman & Steve Darby-Smythe).
In addition Steve was also part of the MOD team who came 2nd in the Departmental team competition.
My thanks to all the Eastern archers who took part, which gave us the chance of fielding the various teams and especially to Brian who shot his first competitive long distance event for us. If we did this well with only 7 archers just think what we might of achieved if we had more archers representing the Region and its areas.
