Target Rifle CSSC TSA Match Vs RAF TRC

The day began warm and sunny and became quite hot in the afternoon. In the morning there was a gentle breeze coming generally from the right and wind coaching was never very difficult. The Civil Service had a reasonable start at 300 yds and averaged 47.6, counting all 12. We did better at 600 yds where we averaged 48.4.

As is always the case, long range can completely change the balance of a match, as it is so easy to lose many points. As often happens the wind strength increased by the afternoon and became more erratic making wind coaching much more difficult. In addition when it is very sunny the light becomes poorer as the afternoon progresses making it difficult to accurately centre the target in the foresight. At 900 yds the team averaged only 45.3 but in the circumstances this was not too bad. At 1000 yds we averaged 44. When our two lowest scores were eliminated we had a total of 1861.146.

Once the shooting was completed we adjourned to the RAF TRC clubhouse for tea, not feeling over confident of success, but were very pleased when the RAF announced their score and we found we were the winners by 16 points, a significant margin.

The top scorer for the CSSC was Rob Lygoe with the score of 193.18. Coaching was done by the following shooters: Ian Davison, Roger Mundy, David Smith, Eric Stuart-Bamford, Rob Lygoe, Jon Taylor, Alastair Haley and Roger Quy.
