CSSC Barbarians

Anyone not familiar with rugby might find the idea of Civil Servants running around a grassy field behaving like Barbarians to be either baffling or even worrying.

Those familiar with the oval-ball game, however, are likely to be far more reassured.

In rugby-terms, the name 'Barbarians' is generally given to a team formed from different clubs that play a handful of matches while enjoying the camaraderie of the game.

It's a philosophy that has been adopted by the CSSC Barbarians Rugby Club, according to its founder and current Captain, Ashley Robinson.

He explained. "We like to play attacking and adventurous rugby. Performances on the field of play have been encouraging even if this hasn't been reflected in recent score lines."

The club was formed from scratch in early 2006 by Ashley, who works for the Home Office Border & Immigration Agency. It aims to offer rugby to players of any standard or level of experience, wherever they may be in the country.

Although based at the CSSC Sports Ground in Chiswick, London, the club is set up to play fixtures around the country against a mixture of club teams and other government departments.

Being proud of rugby's touring heritage the club plan to uphold the tradition every year with tours to Europe at the end of season. The first of these will be in Belgium, scheduled for May 2008.

In addition to that the club plans to hold regular social events such as BBQ's and parties. The highlight of the year will be the annual Dinner and Dance with awards and prizes in recognition of the players' and members' efforts throughout the season.
