Match Reports For CSHA Rep Games on 3 & 4 March 2010
Service ended the season on a high note with two convincing victories against the Royal Navy and the Army at HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth.
CIVIL SERVICE 7 - ROYAL NAVY 0
Service dominated throughout most of the game to rack up one of their biggest wins for some time. Quickly into their stride they opened the scoring within the first 6 minutes forcing the first of a series of penalty corners which Mark Forshaw powerfully dispatched into the top left hand corner of the goals. It was 3-0 by half time with further goals from Adam Wells on 21 mins, touching in at the far post following an initial Reilly shot, and then a snap shot which beat the Navy keeper at his near post on 30 mins from Wayne Bennett. Service then appeared to lose concentration for the initial part of the second half and were guilty of giving possession away too much. Indeed a goal line clearance by Bennett was needed to prevent the Navy finding a way back into the game. By the midway point of the half Service had reasserted their control, scoring up 4 more goals in the final quarter of the game. Firstly a penetrating run from deep by Craig Duffy into the opposition ‘D’ was pulled back for a well placed Kit Wyeth to convert (48 mins). Then it was veteran striker Ali Reilly who stole the show with a well taken 13 minute hat-trick. His first (53 mins) was from a switched penalty corner and the second (61 mins) from a breakaway with Alan Cobb providing the through ball for Reilly to round the Navy keeper and expertly deflect the ball in reverse stick. His hat-trick came just before the end (68 mins) with a sharp turn and crisp shot. This was an excellent performance overall with high quality fast paced hockey and strong contributions from all the squad.
CIVIL SERVICE 7 - ARMY 2
Service continued their form of the previous day against a stronger Army side. Again an early lead was secured when after 6mins Adam Wells was on hand to slip the ball under the keeper following a penetrating run from midfield by Craig Duffy. The Army then began to exert some pressure but the defence held strong ably marshalled by sweeper Steve Lemon and captain Jonny Gordon. During this period Service keeper Karl Blacklock was called upon to make a series of good saves and clearances. Service then clicked back into gear scoring a second on 24 mins through another trademark drag flick at a penalty corner by Mark Forshaw. Four more goals then quickly followed before half time as Service took the game away from the Army.
On 29 mins Alan Cobb neatly deflected the ball past the Army keeper for the third and two minutes later it was 4-0 as Craig Duffy coolly finished after making a break from well inside the Service half. On 32 mins Richard Jones broke into the ‘D’ and unleashed a reverse stick shot past the Army keeper. Just before the half time whistle debutante for this season Jun-Yan Chan worked his way into space and powered a shot just inside the far post for a clinical finish. The second half saw the Army come back into the game pulling two goals back in an end to end period of play which saw both sides create plenty of chances. Kit Wyeth worked tirelessly in midfield to mark former International Guy Fordham. It wasn’t until the last 7 minutes when further goals closed the game out for Service. On 63 minutes Mark Forshaw found himself free for a reverse stick shot that the Army keeper could only help into the roof of the net. Then Steve Lemon completed the scoring on 68 mins with a mazy dribble and powerful shot.
Manager Ernie Vickery and Coach Mike Hannon were delighted with the performance over the two games, especially the way that the squad gelled together, the high tempo at which the games were played and with the very encouraging displays by the new players introduced into the squad this season. Civil Service Hockey colours were awarded to Craig Duffy, Ross Parker, Jun-Yan Chan and Mark Forshaw. The Brian Ware Trophy for the Player of the Season went to Craig Duffy for his excellent all round performances.
