TARGET RIFLE: CSSC TSA vs. COMBINED SERVICES – 6 SEP 2009.
This match is the last CSSC representative match of the Target Rifle season and is always the toughest match because of the quality of the opposition. The match is normally held on the first Saturday in September but, as the match clashed with the NRA Open Day, the NRA could not provide the targets we needed and it was decided shortly before the match to change the match to the Sunday.
As a result of this change, the selected team was weakened by the loss of almost half of the team, including four of our strongest shooters. However, the Combined Services were not affected in the same way and had a very strong team.
As we could only muster 9 shooters, it was agreed that both teams would be 9 shooters with the best 8 scores to count.
In future, this match will be held on the first Sunday in September to avoid clashing with the Open Day. Our Captain, Ian Davison, was not available that day following recent surgery and Eric Stuart-Bamford replaced him.
The day was warm but generally overcast with the sun making only a few brief appearances. The wind was very light from the left at the start but had increased to moderate by 600yds which made wind coaching a little tricky but not impossible.
At 300 yards, the Civil Service made our usual shaky start averaging only 47 dropping 27 points, which was 16 more than the Combined Services, taking all 9 scores.
At 600 yards, we dropped another 31 points as the wind started to hold down our scores and the Combined Services dropped a further 28 points giving them an overall lead of 19.
The long distance stages on Stickledown range in the afternoon are usually expected to decide the match but the CSSC would need a massive effort to overhaul the Combined Services. Unfortunately, at 900 yds, we fell a further 6 points behind the Combined Services, giving them an overall lead of 25, taking all 9 scores.
As a result, it would prove almost impossible to overtake the Combined Services at 1000yds and this proved to be the case as we fell further behind. When the lowest score from each team was deleted, we had lost by 38 points.
This was a disappointing result but it was important to hold the match as once a match is lost it can be difficult to re-establish them in the calendar again. The Combined Services take the same view as they only have two matches each year and it is a great honour for CSSC to be one of their opponents.
Our top scorer was Colin Brook with a score of 193.20.
