Report on South West Region Coarse Angling Qualifier coarse_angling

Tuesday 29 June 2010

Thirty anglers entered this year's qualifier held at Viaduct Fishery Somerton. Anglers were split into three sections on Campbell and Cary Lakes with the top two anglers in each section representing the South West in the National team final. In addition to qualification there were prizes for anglers with the top three weights overall, the winner and runner up in each section.

The weather was hot and muggy with intermittent heavy showers which pushed oxygen levels for the fishery down to 2/3 of its normal level. Consequently fishing was, in the main, hard. Pete Watkins however made light of the difficult conditions to catch consistently from peg 115 on Campbell adopting an 8mm pellet and bomb approach. A change to waggler tactics, again with an 8mm pellet fished at a depth of only 12 inches, boosted his catch by over 30lb in the last 30 minutes to give him a winning weight of 101lb 6oz. Second place overall went to Simon Perkins who also adopted a pellet and bomb approach from Cary Lake peg 85. His 12 large carp weighed 85lb 9oz from what turned out to be the most difficult section on the day. Gary Webber, who had won this event in the prior three years, showed his experience by varying his tactics throughout the day to weigh in 79lb 12oz from peg 112 on Cambell and just push Mark Gaylard (peg 111) out of third place.

South West Region will be represented in the National Final by qualifiers from this event. These are P Watkins, S Perkins, G Webber, R Stanley, P Pollard and M Devoy. G Webber and R Stanley are not available so are replaced by B Chivers and M Gaylard.

Next years qualifier is expected to be at Todber Manor Fisheries, Todber, Nr Sturminster Newton, Dorset. Further details to be available in April 2011 on the CSSC website.
