Civil Service v Police – 8 July 2009

Could it be another win for the men's golf rep team?

A strong Civil Service team assembled on the Fylde coast for the match against the Police, looking to build on the success of the first match against the Navy.

Although confident, we knew that this would be a close match and that a high quality performance was needed.

The weather behaved and the morning foursomes started in glorious sunshine. The Civil Service team began well and some high class golf by the top two pairs out us two up.

It was not long, however, before the Police had responded and won the second two games and it was down to the last game to see if we could take an advantage into the afternoon singles. We certainly had experience in the final pairing and it counted as they scrapped home, winning on the final hole.

After a quick lunch, the singles got underway. Again, a strong start for the Civil Service who quickly built a lead in the early matches, but again the Police fought back and the result was in the balance all afternoon. As the matches reached the final holes, the team continued to play solidly and got the wins required, in the end winning the singles 8-2 and the match 11-4. The match was a lot closer than the score suggests – both Phil Ridden and Simon Coultas were down coming to the final three holes and managed to win down the last, Simon finishing with two birdies to beat a past Police champion.

So the second victory of the year was clinched!

Our thanks to the Police for hosting the fixture and for choosing such a great venue in Fairhaven. The hospitality shown to both sides by the club throughout the day was first class and we look forward to returning next year – and of course to the same result...
