Read how the Rep team played against the Navy...
On a glorious day in Nottingham, the Civil Service Golf Team kicked off the 2009 season with a match against the Royal Navy at Sherwood Forest Golf Course.
With new Captain Steve Kellett at the helm for the first time and a strong team with a good mix of experience and three debutants in Chris Hewitt, Ansley Stewart and John McBurney, expectations were high.
After the morning foursomes, we were not disappointed. High quality golf from the civil service led to some impressive victories and a clean sweep, 5 matches to nil.
Only needing 3 wins from the afternoon singles, it was important that there was no complacency and, after a quick prep talk, the team was sent out to complete victory. We need not have worried as win followed win and the match was won – it just became a case of the margin of the win. Only a win of the last hole by the Navy in match nine salvaged a half point and avoided a whitewash.
So, a brilliant display by the team and a final score of Civil Service 14.5 Royal Navy 0.5 and a perfect start to the year!
