Lewis Cup Final Report 08

Who are the Champions?

Lewis Cup Competition
The 2007/2008 Lewis Cup competition came to a conclusion at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre on the 8th April. In hot sunny conditions four teams competed in the Lewis Cup and Shield Competitions. Reigning champions RCSL 'B' took on the Merseyside Civil Service in the cup final and DTI Sport and Social played the IR TCO FC in the Shield final.

In the cup final Merseyside CS looked to take an early lead with strong attacking play. However, RCSL 'B' stood firm with some resolute defending and good goalkeeping. As the match settled down neither team were unable to fashion any chances of real note with both defences on top. At half time the score remained at 0-0 with both sides respectful of their opponents. Following the interval Merseyside CS made the breakthrough when Thomas King coolly slotted the ball home after excellent play down the right hand side. Unfortunately for Thomas, soon after his goal he was carried off after he had a bad injury to his ankle. Following the injury RCSL 'B' worked their way back into the game when Zok was on hand to turn the ball into the net from the initial shot. After 90 minutes it was still 1-1 meaning that extra time was required to separate the teams. Will Dolan had looked to have given Merseyside the victory when he turned on the edge of the area and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner. RCSL 'B' stirred themselves and equalised after good work from Scott led to an easy finish for McCartney. The match finished at 2-2 with both teams exhausted with the game going to a penalty shootout. Will Dolan, Tony Cumiskey and Michael Young scored the penalties to give Merseyside CS victory 3-2 in the shootout. Both teams are to be congratulated on a fantastic final where excitement and tension went hand in hand.

Shield Competition

DTI Sport and Social started the stronger in the Shield final against IR TCO which saw them take the lead through Marcus Kirby sliding in at the far post to find the net. DTI extended their lead when mid way through the first half Richard Taylor cleverly lobbed the IR TCO keeper. IR TCO responded almost immediately when Oliver Telford scored with a good finish. DTI extended their lead with a brave header from Marcus Kirby, with an assist for goalkeeper Rhys Nadin! IR TCO pushed for a second goal, however DTI held on and went into half time with a 3-1 advantage. After the break DTI extended their advantage through an opportunist goal from Roy Philips and a well worked move finished off by Jay Simms to take their lead to 5-1. IR TCO refused to give up and got a goal back through a penalty by Steve Darcy. Oliver Telford then got his second of the game to make the score line 5-3. IR TCO pushed on for more goals but DTI denied them any further clear cut chances and held on for victory. This brought to an end an enthralling encounter with both teams contributing to a fantastic final
