JOYCE COLE CUP 2010

The Joyce Cole Cup (11-a-side) was once again held at Beeston Hockey Club, Nottingham on 26 - 27 April 2010.

Nine departments were represented, although only 8 teams competed. This was due to the sportsmanship of the 8 players from DEFRA who split themselves between the Home Office and Land Registry teams, allowing 8 full teams to participate rather than having 6 full and 3 partial sides.

The tournament was played on a round-robin basis with games of 25 mins duration. The extra incentive of being awarded 2 points for a score draw encouraged attacking hockey and resulted in some interesting score lines.

The emphasis was, as always, on participation rather than the outcome. It was pleasing to see teams from DSTL/Abbey Wood, GCHQ and the Home Office as well as "the usual suspects" along with those players who had not played for a long time or some who had not played at all!

After 2 days of enjoyable competition (the weather certainly helped) the Home Office team triumphed, narrowly beating RCSL to the title - a new name would be engraved on the trophy! Our patron, Joyce, was on hand to present the trophy and commemorative trays to the winners and runners up. Thanks were also given to all those who participated in another successful event, including the umpires who gave up their time to be with us.
