International Bowls Results - Rhiwbina 2011

CSBA INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND TOURNAMENT

Cardiff Rhiwbina Bowling Club July 2011

The penultimate International Championships took place during Tournament week and as usual it was a great success. My thanks go to the local organising committee for making this possible.

I say penultimate because CSSC have withdrawn funding for the International Championships to continue to be played in their current format after 2012.

There will still be a National Finals and CSSC have promised funding to run these competitions, but the respective National Champions from the four Home Countries will not then receive funding to challenge the International honours as at present.

Results from Cardiff
The AGM was held on Sunday 3 July, those not attending enjoyed a coach tour of the Vale of Glamorgan with afternoon tea. A very enjoyable evening buffet was held at the Rhiwbina Bowls Club.

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff Councillor Professor Delme Bowen opened the proceedings on the Monday morning and presented International badges to all Champions.

Singles
The English champion Terry Barnes and Welsh champion Ed Johnson both had comfortable semi final wins. Terry defeating John Boyd of Scotland 21 – 9 and Ed defeating Colin Williamson of Northern Ireland 21 – 10. The final proved a much closer affair with the score 9 each at 11 ends, 11 each at 14 ends before Ed pulled away to lead 17 – 11 at 17 ends, only for Terry to get back to 17 – 19 at 22 ends. The next three ends Terry managed one more shot to Ed's two leaving Ed the winner 21 – 18.

Pairs
Nick Skidmore was too ill to play but Tony Lea proved an able substitute and with Paul Cater they had a comfortable 19 – 12 victory over Andrew Neilly and David Hilley from Scotland. The other semi final proved a much closer match. Despite David Vowles and Kieron Davies of Wales leading Simon Bell and John Nutt 15 – 9 at 9 ends a score of 1,4,2, gave Simon and John a one shot lead at 12 ends. There was never more than one shot difference for the remainder of the game finishing 21 – 21 after 21 ends. The extra end was a dramatic affair with the shot changing hands several times before John Nutt played a brilliant shot with his last bowl pushing the jack wide to one of his own bowls giving Northern Ireland victory.
The final was again a close match. England leading 9 – 4 at 6 ends, Northern Ireland leading 12 – 9 at 10 ends, 16 each at 16 ends, 5 single shots on the remaining 5 ends 3 to England, 2 to Northern Ireland giving England victory by 19 – 18.

Triples
Two excellent semi finals. England’s Peter Thompson, Ian Peacock and John Harthen playing Eddie Crawford, Billy Fitzsimons and Gareth Bell. England stormed into a 18 – 2 lead after 11 ends only for Northern Ireland to win the next 5 ends, scoring not quite enough though and finally losing 20 –13.

For Wales, Andrew Casey, Ed Johnson and Matthew Partridge did battle with Scotland, Tom Duffy, John Aimer and John McCafferty. 10 each at 12 ends 13 each at 16 ends, Wales managed to score a 1 and a 2 on the last two ends to win 16 – 13.
Opening up a lead of 16 – 6 after 9 ends gave Wales a great start in the final. England getting back to 19 - 13 at 13 ends but Wales holding onto their lead to win 23 - 16

Fours
Northern Ireland played Wales while England played Scotland. Simon Denley, Michael Kelly, Annesley Harrison and Stephen Moran did battle with David Vowles Matthew Partridge, Steve Jackson, and Kieron Davies, Matthew substituting for Andrew Casey who had an injury to his foot. From 2 – 2 at 4 ends Wales won the next four ends to lead 7 – 2. Northern Ireland winning 3 of the next 4 ends reduced the arrears to 7 – 9 at 12 ends, but Wales won 7 of the remaining 9 ends to win 18 – 9.

For Scotland Ian Duff, John Aimer, John McCafferty and Michael Keenan played Frank Smith, Ian Peacock, John Harthen and Peter Thompson of England. The English fours storming into a 13 – 4 lead at 11 ends only for Scotland to fight back to 13 each at 16 ends. England scoring 6 shots to Scotland’s 3 over the last five ends giving them victory by 19 –16.

The final could have gone to either team. 7 each at 7 ends, 15 –11 to Wales at 14 ends 16 each at 19 ends with Wales hanging on to score a 2 and a 1 on the last two ends for a 19 – 16 victory.

For those not involved or even interested in bowls as well as the Sunday trip there were trips to the Welsh Folk Museum and for those seeking a little retail therapy a trip to the MacArthur Glen Retail Park in Bridgend

Tournament week in Belfast 2012
2012 International Championships and Tournament will be held at the Northern Ireland Civil Service Bowling Club Stormont Estate Belfast from Sunday 1st July to Friday 6 July.

International Championships will be played in Singles Pairs Triples and Fours between the National Champions of the four home countries, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. A Double Fours International Competition will be held along with an Open Pairs and Plate competition for those not involved in the International matches. There will also be evening games against several local clubs in and around Belfast. More information will be sent out next March / April to all those who attended Tournaments in the last four years and all those who applied for CSBA, ECSBA, SCSBA, CSBA Wales or NI CSBA matches or entered any of the National Competitions. This will be a fantastic week and all bowlers are invited to come along for a great week of bowls and various trips for non bowlers.

Remember this will be the last International Championships in the present format so come along and give Northern Ireland your support.
