Rain greeted the team for the second match of the season against the Police at Fairhaven. Despite some last minute changes due to illness we were confident of a good performance. The Police had however taken to heart last year's defeat and selected a strong team familiar with the course………. it was to be a tough day.
In the opening foursomes things looked good for a while with the two top games up early on. Phil Ridden and Simon Coultas in the second match maintained their early advantage and went on to win comfortably however in the top match we only managed a half game when a win looked more likely. The final three games were always struggling and we lost all three to finish the morning session down 3.5 to 1.5.
It is always tough to win having a big gap from the morning and so it proved. There were some strong performances, Phil Ridden always in control and playing great golf to remain undefeated on the day, Jonny Todd recovering brilliantly from a slow start and winning despite being 3 down early on. Alistair Mason again won his singles against one of the stronger (and longer) members of the police team. Particular praise must go to Tony Inman and Richard Davies who both came in at the last minute, Tony winning his singles and Richard taking it to the last hole.
Despite a better showing in the singles however, the team suffered its first loss since 2008 and had to hand over the trophy to a jubilant Police side. We now need to regroup and prepare for the RAF in August and hope for a better result.
