Eastern Region Chess Competition
On 17 November 2008 a CSSC Eastern Region chess competition was held at Southend on Sea.
The competition was played as a Swiss with six rounds and a time limit of twenty minutes per game for each player. Sainsbury’s vouchers were given as prizes with a first prize of £75, second prize of £30 and £15 for the highest scoring ungraded player.
There were eleven entries with competitors travelling from as far as Peterborough and Norwich.
There were some interesting games in a closely fought competition and the final places were not decided until the final round. After six rounds there was a winner, Steve Wedlock from Southend with 5 points out of six, but there was a tie for second place which was shared by Kevin Greenacre from Ipswich, Francis Bowers from Peterborough and Graham Lawrence from Bishops Stortford. Ian Duncan from Southend won the prize for the highest placed ungraded player with a score of three points.
