Celebrations on Ice - Curling ReportCurling1Eightende-atPerth

Friday 28th March was a special day for Civil Service Curling.

Friday 28th March was a special day for Civil Service Curling.  The Bonspiel Finals held in Perth was the first finals to be held following the re-organisation of curling from Regional and Representative Squad organisations by moving them under one banner of the Civil Service Curling Association.  The aim of the association is to widen the sport throughout the UK including development at the curling rink in Tonbridge Wells, Kent and Deeside in North Wales.

In all 20 teams were competing in two competitions throughout the day, the High Road and the Low Road.  The games were fiercely contended but in the true spirit of curling with a lot of fun and laughs during the day.  The High Road Winners were Dundee CSSC A with runners up HMRC (East Kilbride) B.  In the Low Road, HMP Perth ran out winners over Greenock CSSC.  The Les McLelland Memorial Quaich for the team with the highest numbers of shots was HMP Perth.

All the prizes were presented by Joan McLelland whose husband was a founder member of Civil Service Curling 35 years ago.  Sadly, Les passed away several years ago but Joan is a regular visitor to the curling events.  This year in honour of the 35th Anniversary, Joan donated miniature Quaichs for the each of the winners of the McLelland Memorial Quaich.

Celebrations were also made following the rare 8-ender inflicted by the team from JobCentrePlus in Perth.  An 8-ender is where one team scores a maximum of 8 shots in one end against their opposition and very seldom happens (shown in the photo above).  The governing body for curling, The Royal Caledonian Curling Club , makes a special award to teams such is the rarity of this score happening.

Did you know that you can curl at Tonbridge Wells in Kent and at Deeside in North Wales?  If you are interested in taking part, please contact Ian Kerr on curlking@btinternet.com

Why not book your family and friends on the fun curling weekend at Kinross from 3-5th October and give it a try?  Watch out for details appearing soon on the CSSC Website
