| On 9 November 2007 a pilot chess competition was held at Southend on Sea ? Rapidplay. A new feature of the competition was the introduction of vouchers as prizes. The first prize was £75, the second prize £30 and there was a £15 prize for the first ungraded player. There were ten entrants including six players from the Southend area. Unusually all the players were from HMRC. The competition was played as a six round Swiss and each player had a 20 minutes time limit for each game. In a closely fought and enjoyable encounter, Kevin Greenacre from Ipswich was unbeaten with 5 points and took first prize. Francis Bowers from Peterborough took second prize with 4.5 points and as an English Chess Federation Arbiter he also acted as the controller. David Guy from Southend won the prize for the best ungraded player. |
