Three CSSC Members share their sporting success stories, financially aided by the CSSC Sponsorship Scheme.
Matthew Gleaves
I just wanted to update you on my efforts at the Liverpool Wheelchair 9 Ball Pool Events on Saturday and Sunday. Over the weekend there were 2 events, the Main Event and the Challenge.
The Main Event is all the tour players together over the Saturday and Sunday.
The Challenge Event is all the players minus the 4 semi finalists of the main event, played on the Sunday.
In the main event I finished 5th. I was a little disappointed as I beat the 2nd ranked player Aslam Abubaker 7-2 which was a fantastic result but then lost in the Quarter Final to a player who I should beat 7-6.
I won the Challenge event easily on the Sunday, winning 5-2, 5-0, 5-0, and in the final I won 5-2 against the 5th ranked player on the tour.
As this was my first event in a year I was pleased by my overall performance and feel that with a little work in a few areas I will be a contender next season starting in February.
I have updated my website www.themole.me to show that you are helping me with my pool endeavours.
Barbara Holmes
Barbara Holmes currently holds the British and World Title in Female Masters Biathle. With help from the CSSC sponsorship scheme she has been able compete in the Biathle UIPM World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria on the 25 September 2011 and defend this title for another year.
Barbara said "I have just returned home from Bulgaria and wanted to let you know that I was successful in gaining the GOLD in the Masters B Ladies (age 50-60) Biathle World Championships 2011. I can also report that the Silver medal went to another lady from the Land registry, Linda Williams, of Weymouth L.R. I am absolutely thrilled with my achievement which the CSSC funding has enabled me to attain."
Kim Napeñas
Kim Napeñas used the CSSC sponsorship scheme to help prepare for her first Arnis (Martial Arts) competition, where she won Gold and Bronze medals. Arnis is the only known traditional Filipino martial arts, which involves the use of a single stick, two sticks, a long and a short stick and a dagger in a 'multi-style' system.
Kim said "I am pleased to report that at the Doce Pares British Championships held on Sunday 9 October I won Gold in the Women's Open Weight Double Stick tournament and I achieved Bronze in the Adult Form (Performance) tournament. Because of these achievements the judges voted and awarded me Women's Fighter of the Day!
(Unfortunately, I lost in the first round of the Women's Open Weight Single Stick tournament.)
This was quite a small national competition, but I am very pleased with my achievements, particularly because it was my first competition. My martial arts school unfortunately will not be able to participate in the WEKAF British Championships as it clashes with one of our grading events. I will be going for my orange belt grading soon.
I am very grateful to the CSSC Sponsorship Scheme for the financial support to help get me ready for the competition."
