The Barbados Challenge is a fantastic way of getting members involved and active within CSSC.
Since its launch in 2004, the Challenge has provided endless entertainment and memories to those taking part and, alongside the Celtic and CSSC Games, it stands as one of the most treasured events within the organisation.
So far CSSC London, South West, Southern and South East have blazed the Barbados Challenge trail and it's made a positive difference to those Regions, just ask anyone you know that has taken part. The newest addition to that party is CSSC Yorkshire, who will be jetting off to the Caribbean island in 2012.

So, what is it all about?
The Barbados Challenge is a tournament encompassing an array of sports and leisure activities in which a team full of CSSC Members stay on the island for a week and take on Bajan teams made up from the Civil Service, Police, Army and locals.
How can I take part?
Qualifying events are held in all competitions with the winners invited to represent their Region in Barbados the following year. That's the normal cycle; competitions year one, trip in year two - for such a big undertaking the planning has to be this well in advance.
I bet it'll be just for elite sportsmen and women.
Absolutely not. Many of the sports will have mixed teams which make the competitions fun and usually much more even. In addition, some of the competitions have a definite social feel to them such as the General Knowledge Quiz, and Scrabble.
What other events can it include?
There's always a wide range of activities, including a pick from the following.
Mixed Volleyball, Dominoes Pairs, Men's 5-a-side Football, Pool Doubles, Ladies Netball, Cricket 6-a-side, Mixed Rounder’s, Golf Pairs, Darts Pairs, Badminton Pairs, Cribbage Pairs, Tennis, General Knowledge Quiz, Clay Shooting, and many others.
Where do Area and Departmental Associations fit in?
Areas and Departments will have key roles to play and contribute hugely to help promote and raise awareness about the Challenge. They may also be able to help financially with the trip and in staging qualifiers.
Speaking of finance, how much does it cost?
For 2011 the costs were as follows, and were heavily subsidised. The Price included: Return flight with Virgin, Continental buffet breakfast, transfers to and from Bridgetown airport to hotel and to the sporting events. Welcome party on arrival, presentation party at the end of first week. Corporate wear for competitors and organisers.
Representatives of CSSC London, South West and South & South East for one week (qualifier) paid £459
Non representatives for one week (guest) £809
Extra week per person £239
COST: All prices are based on two people sharing twin room accommodation
How long does it last?
The Challenge itself will take one week, although some people choose to stay on for an extended holiday. This is at an additional cost but does still represent very good value.
What happens next?
Keep a close eye on your Barbados page of 2012 Qualifiers for updates and developments. In the meantime, if you're interested in taking part or would like to help with the organisation, please contact your Regional BDE for more information.
At the same time, mention the Challenge to your colleagues. If they're already members, you might be able to gauge enough interest for a possible team entry.
If their not members, what better reason to join CSSC than for a chance to go to Barbados?
Now that really is something to aim for.
