Steps For Charity
CSSC member, Chas Ward, faced the elements recently when he took up the challege of competing in the Snowdon Summits Marathon.
He says, "I recently entered the Welsh 1000m Peaks Race - or the Snowdon Summits Marathon - run by Gorphwysfa Club to raise money for Steps Charity. Although it was reported in the press that the race was cancelled due to the bad weather, this is not quite the case. Those entrants who failed to make Ogwen before a specified cut-off were timed out. Due to the weather, this cut off was brought forwards, so this included me. However, I was allowed to continue at my own risk.
"I reported to the Snowdon Summit Marshalls on completion to provide independent verification that I had completed my challenge and was pleasantly surprised to receive confirmation that my time of 6hrs 36mins had been included in the RESULTS. Although I was officially last, I was pleased just to complete the course due to the difficult weather conditions encountered.
"I understand that, while over 600 registered for the various classes, only 245 actually started. Of the Class A fell-runners, approximately 100 started and only 31 finished. The winner, Colin Donelly finished in a time of 4:42:50, which compares badly, due to the weather, to the course record of 3:27:20, by Gavin Bland.
"The background to my running the race can be found at my online fundraising page www.justgiving.com/chasward"
Chas expressed his pride and thanks in receiving the generous support of Leeds Area CSSC in undertaking this event.
