My Road to the Olympics

CSSC Member Nina Foord's quest to become a Gamesmaker at London 2012

My quest to become a Gamesmaker at London 2012 began with the filling in of an application form online for the Triathlon event. I have been involved with the sport since the early 1980s as a competitor and more recently as a level 3 referee.

My application was accepted and I was invited to a selection interview at the ExCel centre. I was concerned that I had made a poor first impression as I turned up a quarter of an hour late due to a breakdown on the DLR, but they were very understanding and moved me to a later slot. I thought things were not going well when I discovered that I should have brought my passport for inspection but they allowed me to send a signed copy. Despite all this I was delighted to hear later that I had been successful and not only would I be helping at the Triathlon but also the cycle road race - with the men’s and women’s events. That makes four that I will be involved with which is great.

Another major event I was involved with was the World Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh last year but more recently I have been busy most weekends officiating at the Canary Wharf Super Sprint Triathlon, the Virgin London Triathlon and the ITU Dextro Energy Triathlon in Hyde Park, (the Olympic venue) finally my Olympic test event job was the recent London cycle road race. I had to travel up to Esher for a training session on the Saturday afternoon, stay overnight for a horrendously early start on Sunday morning. I was put in charge of controlling pedestrians at a crossing point on the course in Richmond Park. Fortunately it was a beautiful day because I didn’t have much to do, and then the race whizzed through and it was time to start clearing up.

As mentioned above I am a level 3 British Triathlon Federation referee and my aim is to be able to take charge of international competitions which will require me to work towards level 1 International Triathlon Union standard.
So as you can tell the sport is keeping me busy and active and I hope it will continue to do so for a long time yet.
