2006 Inter Departmental Championships 5/6 September 2006

Thirty seven teams competed in Men's, Women's and Mixed indoor six a side volleyball over two tough days in Loughborough.Volleyball

High energy, enthusiasm, commitment and effort all on display as players of all abilities gave their all for their teams. Games were very competitive, feisty at times, but played in good spirit in excellent facilities.

Day one saw the group stages in all three competitions played over the four courts at the university, and the two in the Charnwood Leisure Centre. A long day ended with dinner in the university for most, the AGM and a disco on campus. The bar area beside the disco had deep, comfy sofa seats which seemed to preoccupy many minds, and seats! Perhaps people were saving their energies for the following day?!

Second day saw the matches ever closer as the final stages approached. First to a conclusion was the mixed where Dept of Personnel and Finance (Northern Ireland) saw off defending champions Revenue and Customs in the semi final to face up to a Composite team, mostly based around Scottish Prisons, who held off DSRA in their semi final.

The Composite team looked comfortable and in control to take the first set. It even looked all over as they developed an eight point lead in the second set, but DFPNI were not going to fade away and clawed back to take the set and put the game into a deciding set. Again the Composite team took a lead but were never clean away and DFPNI came closer, and eventually overtook them to take the set 16-14 in dramatic fashion, and with it their first ever CSSC Volleyball Championship.

The Women's event had seven teams play a round robin league over the two days. Defending champions Revenue and Customs once again proved too strong not losing a set, never mind a game, and were clear winners ahead of an improving DEFRA side.

The Men's Championship was once again a closely contested affair. DSRA saw off DFPNI in their semi final, albeit after some complacency had contributed to their losing the second set after a dominant performance in the first. But they controlled the third set to win comfortably. Revenue and Customs were similarly comfortable in seeing off DSRA B in straight sets in their semi final.

The final was a see saw match with never more than a few points in it. DSRA showed great teamwork and resilience to emerge worthy winners.
