A total of 78 members arrived at Telford to participate in the 2011 CSSC Scratch and Handicap Finals.
The weather held out for all 3 days of the event except for a strong wind which provided very testing conditions on a golf course with fast and sloping greens.
Practice rounds had proved very valuable!
Handicap Finals:
The winner Peter Roberts blew the rest of the field away with an excellent round of 62 on the first day to lead by 9 from Chris Clarke and Dave Horner. This was exceptional scoring off the yellows considering the fast greens, wind and tree lined fairways. Many competitors had struggled to break par and in some cases 80. Peter Roberts was a man in form and produced a very solid 67 in his second round to win the Handicap Crown for a total score of 129. However the battle was on for 2nd place with improved scoring from everyone on day 2. Dave Horner fired a 67, Roy Mitchell came in with an excellent 69 with a 3 birdie finish and Northern Irelands Kevin Mckeown fired another excellent 69. It was Dave who took the 2nd place honours with scores of 71 & 67 for 138
Congratulations to Peter who also took the Handicap Seniors Trophy for his superb golf.
Scratch Finals:
The question on everybody's mind was could someone stop Andy Minnikin from winning his 6th straight championship. Good first round scoring from Rob Godly, Geoff Stewart and Roger Lamond all with 76 felt that this could be done but Andy one of the best players to grace the championships proved his class with an excellent 1 under par 71. With many competitors certain of the direction of the winner all produced more relaxed and improved golf on day 2.
Graham Bell bounced back into contention with a level par 72 Paul Stephens also came back well with a 74 but it was left to Andy with a solid 77 to add to his 71 for a winning 148 total and to become the Civil Service Champion for the 6th consecutive time, congratulations on a stunning achievement.
Further congratulations to Rob Godley who won the Seniors Trophy for the over 50's.
